Edible RFID

Posted in Uncategorized on February 13th, 2007 by Bergo

Found this over at Warren Ellis (of Transmetropolitan fame)

I guess this could be useful?

From the original new scientist post on edible RFID it seems some uses include:

  • Looking at digestive issues
  • When embedded in a Pill/tablet, make sure patients have swallowed them (think pyschiatric wards)
  • similar radio tags could also be embedded in an artificial knee or hip joint in such a way that they disintegrate as the joint does, warning of the need for more surgery (direct quote from article)

Reminds me of the Intestinator from the movie “Fortress” with Christopher Lambert, which were implanted into the inmates to track and punish them as required.

On a more pragmattic note, maybe it could be used as a temporary security pass in a building or hotel? Just swallow this pill it’ll give you access to the pool or bar?

Must-know terms for the 21st Century

Posted in Uncategorized on February 13th, 2007 by Bergo

I found a new blog Sentient Developents. I like it, hard core Intellectual questioning and thoughts regarding Transhumanism and technology.

His article Must-know terms for the 21st Century intellectual: Redux enagaged my curiosity.

A few of my favourites from this list:

  • Artificial General Intelligence
  • Augmented Reality
  • Friendly AI
  • Mind Transfer

Friendly AI and Artificial General Intelligence struck a chord with me as I wrestle with my own views on this (see How would a Machine thinking? – Probably not Like us). Mind Transfer .. always a popular cyberpunk theme, but again .. I don’t feel the technology and science satisify the fiction. (See Mind Uploading – Cyberpunk vs Reality).

His article is definitely worth a read.

WTF is Web 2.0? – it’s shown in this video

I think Web 2.0 is a term that people use to say “we as people are getting the hang of this internet thing, it’s maturing and we’re starting to actually understand what we can do with it. We understand how it’s changing the way we interact and communicate”.

The following Web 2.0 video on Youtube does the picture 1000 words, video is even better explanation of what it is !. It’s by Michael Wesch who is an Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University.

This has really started bouncing around:

Lot’s of different style sites talking about this video. The Meme is moving from mind to mind.

I like it .. how do you convey a concept to someone in words when they might not understand how you use the technology or the implications? I think video is it. It conveys the intent much better than a spoken metaphor. I do think that video can be an effective documentation tool. This is an interesting use of video in education to convey an idea.
